Superpowers: Super or Not?

At some point in life, one must wonder what it would be like to have superpowers. Whether it be a high school student wishing for super speed to get the fastest track time, a business man wishing for teleportation to get out of a sticky situation, or even a seven year old, wishing for the power to fly, everybody has thought of superpowers that would make their life better. Sadly, one must come to the realization that superpowers don't exist. However, what if they were to exist, and be common in society. This then reveals a deeper question; Which superpowers would be best, and most preferred amongst society? In order to further analyze this question, Benjamin Dunn created a poll on ranker.com, listing various superpowers, and then the Ranker community voted on which superpowers are the "best". Teleportation was first, followed by the power to heal, and time manipulation. However, are these powers truly "the best"?

On Dunn's poll, Teleportation was nominated first, with 1,123 likes. The power of teleportation has many perks and gains. One could simply teleport if they are in danger, or need to get out of a bad situation, or just don't feel like walking. Just the idea of being able to be anywhere you want, whenever you want, is utterly amazing. However, one of the drawbacks of this power is the consequences, or results of it. Suppose somebody was at a business meeting and made a horrible mistake. Or someone was at school and wet their pants. Just because these individuals teleported away after the incident doesn't really help them in the long run. They will still have to go back to work, or school, and face the consequences of doing the action then the additional consequences of ditching work or school. Sure somebody can visit Grand Canyon within the blink of an eye, but are they really gaining anything?

The Power to Heal was nominated second on Dunn's poll. This power is pretty self-explanatory; one can heal anything, of oneself and of others. As selfish as this sounds, when thinking about one's own gains with this power, the power is pretty insignificant. Sure, you can heal yourself, and loved ones, but it is only a matter of time before a three mile bee-line of people are outside your house, begging you to heal their grandfather, or mother, or pet turtle. Although this may seem pleasant at first, but after a while (although this might seem rude), this will become a downright nuisance (similar to paparazzi).

Time Manipulation, in my opinion, should be first place. It is the solution to every problem. Fail a test? Get the results back, study them, go back in time and take the test. Need more time to do homework, eat, or sleep? Just freeze time and do whatever you want. Want to be the best at basketball, or fastest at track? Slow down time and run your normal pace, or slow down time to calculate your shots or dodges. The only drawback is the infamous "ripple effect" where one does a small action in the past, and it drastically affects the future. However, couldn't one just go back in time and fix the "fatal mistake"?

The hierarchy of superpowers is one that is interesting to debate, and truly depends on one's personal condition and opinions. A teenager might want a certain power, as a business man might want another. However, it is how one manipulates and uses this power, that truly determines its importance.

Please leave a comment on what superpower you think would be the best (and why) . Thanks!

  1. The best superpower is without doubt, the ability to manipulate probabilities.

I know you may be thinking that this power is useless. What would one do with probability? Give yourself a greater chance of winning the lottery? Always win at yahtzee? Well, it is quite more than that.

With the ability to manipulate probability, one can make the probability of anything happening 1:1, or a one-hundred percent chance. You could make the probability of you acing a test 1:1, give your enemy a guaranteed chance to contract ebola, or if you are feeling cheeky, make sure that celebrity crush of yours has a one-hundred percent chance of going out with you.

Due to the endless probabilities, one may encounter exploitation of the whole "super-power" system. One could give themselve a 1:1 chance of receiving any other power or force someone to lose their power.

It is a world of endless possibilities (which all could turn to guarantees) with the power to affect probability.

  2. Sai, your blog entry was very comical and interesting to read. It lead me to wonder myself what super power I would prefer should it become a part of society. In response to your poll I choose the ability to duplicate items. Wouldn't it be cool to duplicate anything (and everything) you can possibly think of? A lamborghini? Money (I don't condone illegal activity)? The power to duplicate puts other super powers to shame! Thanks again for the great read!

  3. Sai, I enjoyed reading your blog. Although super powers seem so awesome, you made interesting points about what would be negative about them. Using a poll was also smart. If I could chose I wouldn't even know what to chose. Having super powers seems like it would make life so much easier but not at the same time. However, time manipulation would sure would help on Fulks' tests! The ripple affect would be positive on my grades. But, I would love to teleport to different countries and travel everywhere as well. Your blog was an interesting and insightful read on a simple subject.

  4. I very much enjoyed your post, with all the explanations provided with the powers. After reading your post, time manipulation seems three times more appealing than it had before, though I had thought highly of it to begin with. Other than time manipulation, my second power of choice was to be able to extract the exact amount of money needed out of your pocket at any time. Of course flaws to this would be not having pockets, and probably greed at one point.

Though with time manipulation, theoretically do you think obstructing the course of time could create a sort of paradox? Also, does this affect aging?

  5. I found this blog very interesting. You took something that people don't usually think about seriously, and created a semi-serious argument about which superpower was best. I agree with almost all of you points, from the person with teleportation still having to face the consequences of their actions to a healing superpower becoming a nuisance. However, I do not agree with is your statement about the "ripple effect", and how you can just go back and fix the problem, because now you have changed 2 things in the past, once for your own gain, and once to fix the problem you caused in the future, which changes the future even more drastically. Other than that I enjoyed your blog and I look forward to your future posts.
